Speech and language therapy for preschool and school aged children.

Tamara Long graduated from McGill University’s School of Communication Sciences and Disorders with the experience of having treated children and adults who stutter at the American Institute of Stuttering in New York City. While there, she worked with clients in both the intensive group format and individually. Subsequently, she worked at the Mackay Rehabilitation Center in Montreal. She evaluated and treated children aged 18 months to nine years of age who presented with a large variety of communication disorders, including: expressive and receptive language delays and disorders, SLI, articulation and phonological disorders, stuttering, motor speech disorders, children who had suffered strokes, children with various syndromes and children who presented with global developmental delay. Currently, Tamara is practicing privately as a speech therapist in Ottawa.

Tamara has specific training in the Lidcombe Program for treating stuttering in children and in the DIR/Floortime Approach to Play Therapy, widely used with children whose language skills are underdeveloped and children diagnosed with autism and related disorders. As well, she is very interested in the assessment and treatment of motor speech disorders and has attended training on applying the principles of motor learning to the treatment of developmental apraxia of speech.

Stuttering

Stuttering may include repetition of sounds, syllables or words, sound prolongations and blocks. Preschoolers who stutter are treated using the Lidcombe Program (LP). School age children treated using LP and/or fluency shaping and stuttering modification techniques.


Language Delays

Early intervention provided for two to three year old children presenting with delayed language e.g. vocabulary of less than 100 words, few two-word combinations, difficulty following directions. Preschoolers and school age children treated for expressive and / or receptive language delays.


Specific Language Impairment

Treatment goals may include lexical development, correct use of grammatical structures, pragmatic language use and comprehension of complex sentences and multi-step instructions. Pre-reading skills may also be targeted in the form of phonological awareness skills.


Articulation & phonological disorders

Children with unclear speech, who may be difficult to understand or sound like a younger child often present with an articulation delay or Phonological disorder. Speech is addressed by teaching children the correct placement of their articulators to produce developmentally appropriate speech sound and practicing in words, sentences and eventually in conversation.


Social Language

Children with impaired social language (pragmatics) may have difficulty Greeting others, taking turns in a conversation and staying on topic. They may Also tell stories in a disorganized way. Treatment involves learning the rules of language use, practice, role play, and the development of conversational And storytelling skills often with the use of visual cues.


Motor speech disorders

In young children signs include their first words being late, only producing a few different consonant and vowel sound and word simplification. Older children may present with relatively strong comprehension of spoken language, inconsistent sound errors, more difficulty with longer words and phrases than shorter ones, and speech that is difficult to understand.


Approach

Whole person approach.
 

Tamara supports a whole person approach to speech therapy with acceptance and respect for her clients. Her approach involves evaluating her clients’ needs in all their environments (home, school, daycare etc.) and improving their communication abilities in each of these areas. This may involve working with families and teachers to provide continuous support beyond the therapy room. The impact of a child’s communication impairment on all aspects of social, emotional, and academic functioning is considered and addressed.

Tamara encourages close parental involvement in the therapy process, both during the treatment sessions and in extending communication gains to the child's daily life.

Tamara’s warm, caring and enthusiastic approach has been valued by her clients and their families over the years. She is able to make speech therapy both fun and effective!
